The Sister Cities relationship between Anacortes and Sidney was born out of the ongoing battle that both cities have with the State of Washington over the continuation of the ferry run between the two cities. The classic struggle of 2008-2009 brought together both cities, both Sister Cities associations, many Washington State legislators, the Chambers of Commerce in many cities in Washington and British Columbia, Native American Tribes, and numerous concerned American and Canadian citizens. Victory was achieved, and the efforts to maintain and improve the run continue.
